Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving Day, national holiday in the U.S. commemorating the harvest reaped by the
Plymouth Colony in 1621. The first national Thanksgiving Day was proclaimed by Pres.
Washington for Nov. 26, 1789. Pres. Lincoln revived the custom in 1863. In 1941 Congress
decreed that Thanksgiving should fall on the fourth Thursday of November. The customary
turkey dinner is a reminder of the four wild turkeys served at the PILGRIMS' first
thanksgiving feast.

national holiday in the United States commemorating the harvest reaped by the Plymouth
Colony in 1621, after a winter of great starvation and privation. In that year Gov.
William Bradford proclaimed a day of thanksgiving, and the feast was shared by all the
colonists and the neighboring Native Americans. Although similar observances were held
locally, they were sporadic and at no set time. After the American Revolution the first
national Thanksgiving Day, proclaimed by George Washington, was Nov. 26, 1789. Abraham
Lincoln, urged by Sarah J. Hale, revived the custom in 1863, appointing as the date the
last Thursday of November. In 1939, 1940, and 1941 Franklin D. Roosevelt proclaimed
Thanksgiving the third Thursday in November. When a contradiction arose between
Roosevelt’s proclamation and some of those of state governors, Congress passed a joint
resolution in 1941 decreeing that Thanksgiving should fall on the fourth Thursday of

Amish Culture The past five weeks in my life have really had an impact on me. In such a short period of time, I have become more aware of the different cultures that exist around the world today. We tend to think that our way of life is the only way there is, or at least the only right way. It is really very ignorant to think that everyone believes and behaves the same way. People should stop being so self-centered and take notice and interest in cultural diversity. There are numerous different

Columbus Day Columbus Essay In April, 1492, Spain received reports that the Portuguese succeeded in reaching the Indian Ocean, therefore Spanish monarchs authorized Christopher Columbus to sail to Asia and establish trade and start to convert natives to Christianity. In return, Columbus would receive one-tenth of all the prof
  • The truth about Thanksgiving
The truth about Thanksgiving The truth behind the tradition is surprising. Thanksgiving and the Pilgrims seem to go together, but the truth is, the Pilgrims never held an autumnal Thanksgiving feast. However the Pilgrims did have a feast in 1621, after their first harvest, and it is this feast, which people often refer to as "The First Thanksgiving". This feast was never repeated, though, so it can\'t be called the beginning of a tradition, nor was it termed by the colonists or "Pilgrims" a Than

Ben Franklins Religion Although in his Autobiography Benjamin Franklin claims that at a young age he "became a thorough Deist" (1359), Franklin saw God as much more than a blind watchmaker. Among his frequent references to practicality, reason, and the value of experimental science, Franklin\'s metaphysical beliefs [2] easily get lost, especially as he distances himself theologically from colonial Christian doctrines. It becomes convenient but incorrect to let Franklin\'s "virtue" stand apart fr

Catch221 Catch-22 The name of the novel I read is Catch-22 by Joseph Heller. This novel’s uniqueness makes it hard to classify but I would classify it as an anti-war novel. The main theme of the novel is one of hope and freedom from the barbaric grasp of war. Heller uses World War II as an almost invisible framework in which he places a number of vaguely related stories presented in no particular chronological order, although the final narrative does tie them all together. Catch-22 was written i

There is also acting where people physically perform a story. Books are another storytelling device that is more permanent, the words are kept and they can be reviewed again and again. Now there are movies, which provide story telling with more an emphasis on visual effects. The question is which way is the best to present a certain t
